20943: Goodman: 20929: O'Brien RE: 20902: (Chamberlain) Haiti's starving artists (fwd)
From: Wendy Goodman <wendygg2000@yahoo.com>
I know a bit about the Art Creation project in Jacmel, and have been in communication with the 2 women who started it. They have responded to me and my efforts with SKAKAJ (Sant Kominote Art ak Kilti pou Avansman Jakmel which also works with children) in a most supportive way, solely because they resonate with what I am doing and want to truly help the situation. Both our undertakings are young, we are all doing the best we can.
I too was a bit taken aback at that comment about the road. But thought the rest of the article quite lovely and encouraging, and congratulate Judy and Sandra for doing what they can to publicize positive efforts in Haiti during a very dark time.
I FIND IT A SHAME, that aspersions are cast on a most heartfelt effort so quickly because of one statement. Both Sandra and Judy have reached out to me to see how we can help and support each other in our shared goals (to use art to help the learning and development of children in Haiti, and to feed them some at least) not to compete or find fault.
I believe one of the root causes of the problems in Haiti stem from distrust and the lack of seeking to understanding before blowing something/someone off (fe vag).
Can't we at least begin to do so on this list?
Obviously we are all interested in helping Haiti 'improve'. Let us at least try to begin with that assumption.
Why not ask "does anyone know about this project? It sounds interesting but my radar was raised when I read that the road to Jacmel is bad".
Let's start encouraging one another in our efforts. I am not saying we can't be critical, but we can do so in a supportive and appreciative way. PLEASE....we all know it's not easy.....but if we want to 'improve' Haiti, this is surely a place/way to begin, with ourselves.
I was also interviewed about SKAKAJ, the article was published in my local paper today. I detected some minor falacies in the article, but overall it was well done and effective. I must have had 5 strangers approach me today, wanting to know more about Haiti and SKAKAJ, and congratulating me on what they saw as a powerful and admirable undertaking when all they are hearing about Haiti is about the killing, poverty etc.
I imagine Judy had a similar experience.
Again....congratulations Judy and Sandra for acting on the feelings you had when you visited Haiti. I wish there were more of you/us around.
May Peace Prevail
