LeGrace Re: Gardner Voodoo(sic) article
Mr. Gardner is, of course, free to present his opinion. It is
unfortunate that he appears to have perceived his experience of a Vodou
ceremony through a screen --- the Silver Screen of Hollywood "B" movies of
the forties and fifties. Perhaps he had also read some of the
sensationalized books of that era and later. The story is unfortunate for
Mr. Gardner, who might have discovered something more useful and more
profound had he seen beyond his "screen;" and unfortunate for Haitians
enduring this prejudiced and prejudicial characterization that trivializes
serious matters of life and death. It also trivializes significant aspects
of Haiti's valuable African heritage.
For the record, I am not an adherent of Vodou.
