LA TROUPE MAKANDAL OFFERS CLASSES IN HAITIAN DRUM AND DANCE AT TWO SITES
IN BROOKLYN
La Troupe Makandal, New York's Center for Haitian Drum and Dance, offers
Krik! Krak!, a program of three classes in Haitian drum and dance at two
sites in Central Brooklyn. All ages are welcome. The times and
locations are
Mondays and Wednesdays, 6 pm to 7:30 pm at the St. Jude Community
Center, 409 Maple Street between New York Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue in
East Flatbush, and
Saturdays, 3 pm to 4:30 pm at Father Dempsey Center, 61 Park Place
between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue in Park Slope.
Frisner Augustin teaches drumming at all sites. Rozna Zila teaches dance
at the St. Jude site, and Marie Edith Jean at the Father Dempsey site.
Makandal has partnered with the Tončl Lakay Dance Theatre to provide the
class at the Dempsey Center.
The Troupe launched Krik! Krak!, which takes its name from a storytelling
game in Haiti, at the St. Jude Center in 1998 with support from the
Puffin Foundation. In 1999 additional funding from the New York State
Council on the Arts enabled its expansion. Initially a program for
children, it now reaches out to adults. The program aims generally to
promote a positive image of Haiti through its traditional performing
arts, and specifically to identify and encourage talent within the
community.
The New York State Council on the Arts has continued to support the
program. It has also received support from the National Endowment for
the Arts, the Borough President of Brooklyn, the Puffin Foundation, LP
Music Group, and Susan Sarandon.
Those interested in taking advantage of Krik! Krak! may call 718-953-6638
or email makandal-ny@juno.com for further information, including travel
directions and fees.
