TAKEOUT
Chef Creole, hip Haitian
A hop and a skip into Little Haiti from the Design District, Chef Creole
Seafood Takeout is a hip Haitian hangout at 54th Street and Northwest Second
Avenue. Known for conch fritters, it has everything from grilled chicken to
crab and whole fried snapper. Takeout's the title but you'll be tempted to
tarry in the shady, breezy eating area and study the photos on the wall of
fame.
There are no posted prices other than the $4.99 chicken with sauce special,
but there are photos of the dishes and a warning that the stew conch platter
is now $10.75 because of shortages. Prices are on a single handwritten list
that's subject to debate; ask.
On a recent visit, the fritters had run out but the stew conch was a fine
consolation in a dark, piquant sauce. Chicken with sauce was a huge, savory
meal with five pieces and a mountain of perfect steamed rice and sweet
plantains, a salad and hot slaw. Hearty rice and beans are another option.
