Celebrating Haitian culture

In honor of May as Haitian Cultural Heritage month, there are several worthy
exhibitions in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. At the Museum of Art in Fort
Lauderdale through May 31, there's an installation by the important Haitian
painter Jean-Claude Garoute, who also goes by the name of TIGA. It spells
out the word "Haiti" via small earth-toned paintings inspired by spirits and
the faces of female relatives. Admission is $3 to $6. The museum is at 1 E.
Las Olas Blvd.; 954-525-5500.
TIGA's influence as founder of the Saint Soleil movement of Haitian popular
art is present in "One Art, Various Expressions," through May 29 at the
Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale; 954-357-6990.
Saint Soleil master painters Levoy Exil and the late Prospere Pierre-Louis
have works in the show, along with modernists Philippe Dodard and Iris.
A photographic understanding of Haiti is on view through May 29 at the
African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd.,
Fort Lauderdale; 954-625-2800. "Haiti: Land of Contrasts" presents images by
Roberto Stephenson and Daniel Kedar.
Photojournalist Maggie Steber started going to Haiti in the mid-1980s to
cover the country's political problems. Her stunning color images, from an
intimate look inside a voting booth to the grief expressed at a funeral, are
displayed through June 6 in the lobby at the Historical Museum of Southern
Florida, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami; 305-375-1492.
Museum shows
"Images Transcending the Medium" is a career retrospective of mixed-media
paintings and etchings by Joan Brechin Sonnenberg. These powerful figurative
and abstract works are on view through June 19 at the Coral Springs Museum
of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive; 954-340-5000. Admission $3, $4; free on
Wednesdays.
Cleverness abounds in a traveling exhibition from the Society of
Illustrators featuring two-dimensional artwork commissioned by book
publishers and other clients. It is scheduled through June 1 at the Art
Institute of Fort Lauderdale, 1799 SE 17th St.; 954-463-3000.
Sculptures, videos, installations and works on paper are part of "Michael
Joo," a revealing and humorous retrospective of recent work by the
Korean-American artist featuring impressions of Alaska. The show conveys the
coldness of the place and what it can do to the human psyche. It's on view
through June 6 at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, 601 Lake
Ave., Lake Worth; 561-582-0006.
