Author Danticat to speak at book series ceremony
POPULAR AUTHOR: Edwidge Danticat.
The Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College will close
the 2004 One Book, One Community series at a ceremony in which the two
winners of the Breath, Eyes, Memory writing contest will be announced.
The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Diaspora Vibe
Gallery, 3938 N. Miami Ave., in the Design District, and will feature author
Edwidge Danticat.
The evening will include a conversation with Danticat and a dramatic
interpretation of excerpts of her book, Breath, Eyes, Memory by MDC students
under the direction of Miranda Childe, professor of English as a Foreign
Language at the Wolfson Campus.
The winners of the writing contest, which was based on the ''One Book, One
Community'' spring book selection, will be honored at the event. Danticat's
books will be on sale at the gallery.
The event is part of a three-month series of activities related to the
selection of Breath, Eyes, Memory as the spring title for One Book, One
Community, the FCLA reading initiative across South Florida.
The novel tells a story of mothers and daughters, exile and return and honor
and disgrace and speaks in a voice both poetic and passionate of four
generations of Haitian women who must overcome their powerlessness.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the
Florida Center for the Literary Arts at 305-237-3940
