22026: LeGrace Benson: LeGrace re: Power query Aristide paintings
From: Legrace Benson <legrace@twcny.rr.com>
I hope there will be helpful responses to Mike Power’s call for more
information about the paintings of Aristide that will be shared on this
list.
There is something of a tradition in Haiti of artists painting such works.
There are reports of such works, including a large painted banner of the
Emperor Solouque as the Christ Child seated in the lap of the Virgin Mary,
for
example. Certain of the street murals of 1990-1991 showed Aristide in a
similar
pose. One of those was just off Ave. ML King, and the story was that it
was a
neighborhood- rather than a “patronage” project. Anyone who
has
more information on the works Powers refers to will be rendering a
valuable
service to scholars of Haitian art and history.
