22047: (Wucker) Summer Haitian mobilization in Florida (fwd)
From: "Michele@wucker.com" <michele@wucker.com>
The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride is looking for activists to mobilize
Haitian immigrants in Florida over the summer. Here are details:
New American Freedom Summer
In south Florida, Haitian refugees are often detained, families are
separated, and civil liberties are denied. In Arizona --where there is an
anti-immigrant referendum poised for a state-wide vote--immigrants face
armed vigilantes, ruthless smugglers, and death in the desert. These and
other acts of discrimination require a movement to empower Latino and
Haitian communities through mobilizing for change.
The New American Freedom Summer seeks activists who will volunteer a minimum
of 4-6 weeks this summer to:
1. Make door to door contacts with immigrants to encourage them to engage
in civic life;
2. Participate in community-based education around immigrant rights; and
3. Engage in direct action “Truth Brigades” that expose the problems of
our broken immigration system.
Requirements:
1. Fund-raising plan to cover costs (scholarships and suggestions for
funding are available);
2. Willingness to work campaign-style hours;
3. Strong communications skills; and
4. Desire to work within the coalition to empower immigrants to
participate in civic life.
Prior to working in Arizona or Florida , participants will receive training
in Mississippi from leaders of the 1964 Freedom Summer. This training will
take place June 28-June 30. Participants will begin work July 1.
Participants will receive a minimum stipend of $150/week. Accommodations
will be arranged at each site.
