22045: Haitian Studies Association/KOSANBA Joint Call for Papers 2004 (fwd)

From: Lois E Wilcken <makandal-ny@juno.com>

ANNOUNCEMENTS & CALL for PRESENTATIONS
16TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Re-discovering Haitian History: Archiving Memory to Construct our Future
October 6 - 8, 2004, University of Puerto-Rico, Rio Piedras Campus
Sponsored by The University of Puerto Rico

In Conjunction with KOSANBA's VI international colloquium

Despite its tumultuous history, Haiti has remained in the eyes of the
world both a symbol of freedom and a people’s unremitting struggle for
self-determination. In the bicentennial year of Haiti’s independence
(1804-2004), the Haitian Studies Association’s 16th Annual Conference
will deal with the rediscovery of the hidden treasures of a national
heritage that has captured the creative spirit and the human imagination
of Haitians and of peoples in many parts of the world. The principal
purpose of this conference is to rediscover that heritage, to reflect on
the manifold ways in which it has shaped the lives of millions of people,
and to consider the ways in which their past accomplishments can foster
new visions for the future.

KOSANBA's VI international colloquium
This year the Congress of Santa Barbara (KOSANBA) will hold its 6th
Annual Colloquium jointly with HSA. The Theme of the Colloquium is: "2004
ONWARD/The Gede Family: Life and Death Struggles."

For the KOSANBA colloquium, please submit a one-page abstract, a
synopsis/summary to Patrick Bellegarde-Smith. Suggested subjects/ topics
can be on Vodou, on theology, politics, inter-faith connections, the
Gede, sex and gender, comparative approach with other neo-African
religions, etc. For further information, please contact Patrick
Bellegarde-Smith for KOSANBA at pbs@uwm.edu

The 16th Annual Haitian Studies Association conference with the KOSANBA
colloquium theme is Re-discovering Haitian History: Archiving Memory to
Construct our Future. The conference will take place at The University of
Puerto-Rico, Rio Piedras campus on October 6-8, 2004. The program will
consist of panels, roundtables, keynote address and individual
presentations. Selected papers from the conference will appear in the
Journal of Haitian Studies (JOHS), a refereed academic publication of the
Haitian Studies Association (HSA) to be issued approximately one year
following the conference.

The 16th Annual Conference welcomes proposals from authors, scholars,
teachers, librarians, archivists, activists, and the general public on
all aspects of the Haitian historical narrative and the archiving of
these various historical, social, and political studies. Among the topics
that might be considered are the ways in which one builds up a
substantial multi media archive, which explores fields of history,
anthropology, geography, space, memory and contemporary Haitian popular
culture. The presentations will demonstrate how using the available
archiving technology, the life histories, arts and workers, diasporic and
transnational communities, as well as the fragile, but extremely
important stories of the past, which inform the present, can be made
available for use in schools, urban and rural centers in Haiti and across
the globe through the world wide web and intranets. Participants may
focus on how the process also ensures that our audio recordings can be
preserved for future generations. The conference also encourages
individuals working with a visual archive of photographs, diaries,
performances and documents. So come and share your archiving methods with
us, so that an intellectual and cultural resource for Haitianists,
researchers and future generations can be developed. Issues crossing
multiple race/class/gender and population lines and covering topics from
forced migration, life histories, immigration, environment, health,
contemporary Haitian popular culture are strongly encouraged.

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF PROPOSALS

Guidelines for general participation in the conference and a proposal
submission form are attached. Please keep proposals to one page,
excluding information on authors and presenters. To be considered,

If submitting a panel proposal, you must include a title for each paper
within that panel. In addition, panels should include no more than 3
papers and a chair/discussant. Roundtable proposals should include no

Participation Limitation
HSA tries to allow as many people to participate in the conference as
possible. Therefore, each participant is limited to one paper

roles—presenting a paper and chairing a panel, or presenting a paper and
participating in a roundtable discussion.

All program participants must register for the conference.
Pre-registration will begin in the month of July. You need to be a member
of HSA to present at the conference, but we encourage you to join the
organization as soon as you send your proposal.
