Haiti's birthrate

Re the June 7 Business Monday article about Haiti's economic turmoil amid
chaos:

Any discussion of Haiti and economics that doesn't focus on the issues of
the birthrate and overpopulation misses the point. Haiti's population long
ago outstripped the resources of western Hispaniola and of any possible
future foreign aid. Until Haitian officials and those involved in providing
aid recognize that birth control is the foremost step to recovery, Haiti and
its people are destined to wallow in the morass of poverty forever.

Sadly, birth control is anathema to missionaries in Haiti. As of late, even
the U.S. government, because of pressure from religious groups, turns a
blind eye to the issue and curtails all financial support for birth control
as part of foreign-aid packages. Because overpopulation affects the quality
and availability of education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and
employment, this must be addressed. It is befuddling that the story didn't
even mention it.
