DISCUSSION: “Vodou, A Sacred Theatre”

Heritage Education Center Auditorium

Presenter -

Dr. Marie-José Alcide Saint-Lot, Author and Educator
at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Vodou (spirit), essentially African, is the indigenous
religion of Haiti, practiced by the great majority of
the population. As with many religions, Vodou is a
source of Art. It contains myths, legends, dances,
music, songs, philosophy and poetry. The study
establishes that Vodou is a potent theatrical force.
However, due to unfavorable circumstances, its
artistic resources have not yet been plumbed fully.
Dr. Marie-José Alcide Saint-Lot will discuss how
Vodou, like some other rituals, encompasses theatrical
and dramatic elements, which give it the character of
sacred theater. Dr. Saint-Lot, born in Haiti, holds a
Doctorate degree in Theater Theory and Criticism, a
Master’s degree in Dramatic Fine Arts and a Bachelor’s
degree in Theater Arts and Oral Communications. She
taught at the City College of New York for several
years and is currently teaching Public Communications
at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, Jamaica,
W. I. and in the Bahamas. A book signing will follow
the program.
