22432: Labrom: Re Coats of Arms from the reign of King Henry Christophe (fwd)

>From voyageslumiere@haitelonline.com

While I was in England recently I went to the College of Arms to see the
book which has all the Coats of Arms of King Henry's reign and it was
fascinating. All of the Coats of Arms were in pristine condition - all
beautifully decorated in color.

So get a piece of Haitian history and buy a copy. They are hoping to
print about 900 and need as many people as possibly to buy one so it
will make this whole effort worthwhile. This is only one of two books
with all the Coats of Arms in - the other one is with the Baron de
Béliard's family in Paris.

The book will include key features such as:
Hardcover binding with between 140 and 200 pages.
Full colour photographs of the entire volume, including 92 coats of arms
of the nobility, the king and his family and the capital city of the
Kingdom, Cap Haïtien.
A lengthy historical introducton by a leading scholar
An essay on the heraldry of Henry Christophe's kingdom.

The initial publication will work out about US$75-80 per copy incl.
postage and packing.

Any other information you need, do contact me offline.

2004 / update of April 25, 2004

Dear President,

I am writing not only as a member of the Association de Généalogie
d'Haïti but also on behalf of the College of Arms in London, the
official body dealing with matters relating to heraldry and genealogy on
behalf of the Crown in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Among the many hundreds of heraldic and genealogical manuscripts we hold
here, one particularly unusual example is a volume entitled the Armorial
Général du Royaume d'Hayti, a book containing paintings of coats of arms
granted in 1811 by Henry Christophe to his new nobility. We have always
received a steady stream of individual enquiries relating to this
fascinating item, including requests for photographs of individual
pages, from people of Haitian descent or with relevant historical
interests, and we have now decided (not before time, perhaps) to publish
the whole manuscript in a fitting way.

As will shortly be advertized on our website
(www.college-of-arms.gov.uk) and elsewhere, a complete photographic
reproduction of the manuscript is planned, with historical and heraldic
essays by way of introduction, and where possible notes about the
individuals named in the armorial. The beauty and eccentricity of the
heraldry is bound to ensure a wide readership among those interested in
heraldry for its own sake as well as those with Haitian interests.
However, as with many books that are slightly off the beaten track, it
needs to be substantially paid for in advance of publication. The
College of Arms is an official body but it does not receive public funds
and the income deriving from its official activities has by law to be
returned into Crown purposes, so we are unable to support the
publication directly ourselves. We have therefore produced a publicity
leaflet, offering the book in advance of publication to subscribers at a
discounted price. Subscribers who take up this opportunity will, if they
wish, have their names published in the finished volume.

I attach a low resolution pdf version of the leaflet for your
information. Would it be possible to let members of the Association know
about the book and invite them to become subscribers? This could be done
by placing a copy of the leaflet on the website, or sending it by e-mail
to all members as a mail-out, or by post to those whose postal addresses
you have. Obviously our publishers would cover the postage costs. I
wonder if you might also have any ideas or advice on how to make sure
that publicity for the book reaches the audience that will appreciate it
most, particularly in North America and the Caribbean, including of
course Haiti itself. We would be extremely grateful for any advice you
might be able give, in the light of your understanding of the sector.

Yours sincerely,

Clive Cheesman
