From: "tminsky@ix.netcom.com" <tminsky@ix.netcom.com>
The Jacmel (International) Film Festival is in full swing and it
terrific. It began Fri, 9th.
Every day films screen at 11:00am and 2 or 3:00pm. in 5 different
venues in Jacmel...the office of the festival is across from the
sea (down the street from the rear of the Flordia Hotel, Rue St. Anne),
they are showing films in a small screening from next to the office, the
Alliance Francais, the Music School, and two other venues. An art expo is
happening on the
ground floor of the Art Center (on the sea), receptions, there was
a q&a with the director of Harder They Come with interested viewers,
young residents from Jacmel.
Most of the directors are here. MOre than 75 from shorts to features
films are being screened and its amazing the diversity and breath
of the films. Political, cultural, historical (life in a haitian valley by
herskovits filmed in 1936 was great). Non-Haitian subject films
including Mali, S. African, Jamaica, and even the new film The Corporation
is part of this comprehensive festival.
Folks if you're in Haiti you might try to make it to Jacmel to sample
some of these films. At night they have a HUGE screen set up in the street
which is blocked off--last nite it was Royal Bonbon.
By the way, all the films are free. Many repeated through the week.
