23179: Wilcken: MASTER CLASSES IN AFRO-HAITIAN DANCE (fwd)
From: Lois E Wilcken <makandal-ny@juno.com>
STARTING THIS WEEK...
LA TROUPE MAKANDAL presents
MASTER CLASSES in AFRO-HAITIAN FOLKLORE DANCE with PIERRE DESRAMEAUX
Pierre Desrameaux is a veteran dancer/choroegrapher of Afro-Haitian
folklore dance, music and culture. Born and raised in Haiti, he studied
and taught folklore dance alongside Vivian Gautier. Lavinia Williams
featured him in her book Haiti-Dance. Currently visiting New York,
Desrameaux will conduct a five-part series in traditional Afro-Haitian
dance with live drumming. These five two-hour workshops are an
opportunity for Haitian dance lovers to deepen their dance experience.
Desrameaux has an extensive knowledge of this art: he knows many rare
dances and rhythms that few of today’s Haitian dancers and teachers have
taught or practiced. Dances like rabòdaj, mazòn, koy, wangòl, maskawon,
zarenyen, boumba, kita, and even parigòl are fast disappearing from the
repertoire. This series of workshops offers students a chance to focus on
these and other unpracticed dances, and their historical roots. To all
the serious lovers of Haitian dance, do NOT pass up this one-time
opportunity. Spread the word!
