Writer, journalist and poet, Mark Dow will speak about Haitian refugees and
other issues on Sunday, October 10 at 7 p.m. at Tap Tap Haitian Restaurant,
819 5th Street, Miami Beach, FL.

Dow will present and sign his new book, "American Gulag: Inside US
Immigration Prisons," which deals with the plight of undocumented immigrants
in U.S. jails.

A screening of "Abandoned: The Betrayal of America's Immigrants" directed by
Jacmel-based director David Belle will follow.

Mark Dow went from teaching at the INS prison called "Krome North Service
Processing Center" to working at the Haitian Refugee Center in Miami at the
height of the refugee crisis after the 1991 coup d'état. Tens of thousands
of Haitians fleeing political persecution were imprisoned at the American
base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Many were sent back to Haiti to be tortured or
killed. This crisis spurred Dow to write "American Gulag."

Dow documents illegal beatings, psychological torment, prolonged detention,
racism, and inhumane conditions. Intelligent, impassioned, and unlike
anything that has been written on the topic, his gripping work of
investigative journalism should be read by all Americans.

Meanwhile, Belle's powerful film, "Abandoned: The Betrayal of America's
Immigrants," depicts the injustice and severity of current U.S. detention
and deportation policies. His most recent films are, "Pawol Gran Moun" and
"Madam Ti Zo."  "Madam Ti Zo" will have its United States premier at Tap Tap
on Sunday, October 24.
