Says drug being exported to Haiti for guns
Saturday, November 06, 2004
THE police say members of Operation Kingfish - the force's newly launched
task force - have been destroying several acres of ganja cultivation in
rural Jamaica, where it is suspected that the drug is being exported to the
French-speaking Caribbean island of Haiti in exchange for guns.
However, the police did not say where the operations have been carried out
and whether anyone has been arrested.
In the meantime, the Constabulary Communication network (CCN), the police's
information arm, said that since the launch of Operation Kingfish two weeks
ago, the task force has reaped many successes and is overwhelmed by the
positive response it has received, particularly to the 811 number.
"Up to Wednesday over 420 phone calls came in on the line, of which 94 were
considered to be actionable, 38 were referred to the local police,
immediate action was taken in 24 of the cases and 32 are being carefully
and thoroughly assessed," said the CCN.
It said the calls received ranged from information on drug kingpins,
extortionists, organised gangs, illegal firearms, wanted men, uncustomed
goods, drugs and the movement of criminals.
