The Haitian Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (HABETAC) at
Brooklyn College is pleased to announce its annual Essay, Poetry and
Visual Art contest for Bilingual Haitian Creole students in grades 3- 12.
*FOR ESSAY*
Write a biographical essay on one of the following Haitian personalities:
/a) /Jacques Roumain, /Author/
b) Nemours Jean Baptiste, */Konpa Dirèk/* Musician
c) Weber Sicot, */Kadans Ranpa and Konpa Dirèk /*Musician
/d) /Marie Vieux Chauvet, /Author/
e) Edwidge Danticat, /Author/
f) Philome Obin, /Painter/
g) Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, /Author/
h) Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable, /Founder of Chicago (U.S.A.) and
Fur Trader/

*FOR POETRY*
Write a poem, exploring your thoughts and feelings regarding
the following Haitian personalities' contributions to Haitian culture
and history.
*FOR VISUAL ART*
Create a portrait or image or symbol that captures the essence of these
Haitian personalities' lives and works.

*Deadline for submission in all categories is May 16, 2005*

* *
*RULES*
1. The contest is limited to students enrolled in Dual/Bilingual
Programs where Haitian Creole and English are used as languages of
instruction. However, Haitian students who are former English
Language Learners can participate.
2. All essays and poems must follow our guidelines to be eligible for
consideration.
3. Entries must be submitted in Haitian Creole or English.
4. The length for *essays and poems* are as follow:
*ESSAY*
*POETRY*
*Elementary*
Grades 3 - 5
250 - 300 words
15 - 20 lines
*Intermediate*
Grades 6 - 8
350 - 400 words
20 - 30 lines
*High School*
Grades 9 - 12
450 - 500 words
15 - 25 lines
5. The number of words must be written in the upper right corner of the
first page of the essay.
6. Essay and poem must be typewritten, preferably double-spaced.
Handwritten submissions will be immediately disqualified.*__*
7. Essay / poem must be on 81/2 X 11" paper.*__*
8. The essay or poem must be *typed in a double spaced format on 8 ½
**x 11" paper. *Entries should be sent by first class (regular)
mail and postmarked by *_5:00 P.M. on May 16, 2005_*
9. Participants must complete the application form provided*. NAMES
SHOULD NOT APPEAR ON THE ESSAY/POEM.* Essays and poems will not
be returned.
* ARTWORK*
1. Artwork must be submitted on a maximum of 11X14 paper.
2. Students may use any medium (crayons, paint, pencils, etc.).
3. Title of art piece should be written on the attached form
*JUDGING*
1. A committee of judges selected by HABETAC will judge the essays,
poems and paintings submitted. This committee will determine the
first, second and third place winners in each category and genre.
The committee's decision is final.

2) Originality and creativity

3) Content and clarity of expression

4) Use of the conventions of the Haitian language
The winners will be announced on May 23, 2005. They will
occupy first, second, and third places in each category and at each
level. HABETAC will publish the text of the winners in its Newsletter
and other publications. In addition, winners and their parents will be
honored at the *Annual Conference on the Education of the Haitian Child,
which will take place on Friday, May 27, 2005 @ Brooklyn College in
Brooklyn, from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.*
