24661: KWhite (Question) HSA Conference 2005

Last year, before President Aristide left the country, the Haitian Studies Association decided to boycott Haiti for its annual conference. The reasons given were human rights and political abuses on the part of Aristide and his government.

This year the conference is to take place in Port-au-Prince. I'm not sure that I believe the accusations that he was "kidnapped" by the U.S. government, but I do think that the U.S. government helped oust him by saying that they would not aid him against those starting their coup.

In my opinion, Latortue is a stooge of the U.S. government, MY government, and my government helped to take a legally elected president from office. I am not disputing Aristide's abuses - I don't know enough about the situation to do so.
I do find it curious that the HSA has decided to have their conference in Port-au-Prince this year. This, to me, implies that their board members support what the U.S. government did. It also implies that they support Latortue. This seems anti-democratic to me. Could folks from the HSA and its board please comment on their decisions?
