Neptune is under indictment, with probable cause, for
a crime committed against the people, under his watch
as prime minister.  His demand for unconditional
release is sheer arrogance and nonsense.  His hunger
strike is without moral basis, and if he should die as
a result he will die without a principle.  (And
wouldn’t it be just like Yvon Neptune to miscalculate
his own death!)  Nothing is to be gained by his death,
however.  A compromise would be for the interim
government to release him under house arrest, and for
his international supporters (Waters, Concannon, et
al) to mobilize enough resources to guarantee him a
fair trial.

Also without a moral basis is the absurd claim that
Aristide/Neptune should not be held accountable
because former NYC mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Bill
Clinton “got away” with crimes committed under their
watch.  St. Vil is right on one count: the buck did
stop with Giuliani in the Louima case and in the
police killing of Amadou Diallo and Patrick Dorismond.
 Instead Giuliani became a national hero after 9/11.
But let’s not beat a dead horse.  History will not
absolve George Bush for the crimes committed in
Fallujah and elsewhere, by virtue of the “Pote Mak
Sonje” principle and also because victory in the long
run belongs to the peoples of the world.

HAITI IS NOT ALONE IN THE WORLD.  In far away
Kyrgyzstan and in Ecuador, people recently chased away
their corrupt heads of state, elected or not, and
called for their indictment for the police killing of
demonstrators in the last days of their government.
The same thing happened I believe in Bolivia.  Haiti
deserves no less.  Just like Lavalas had its showcase
trial in Raboteau, the current government can and must
organize a decent trial in St. Marc, in spite of the
sorry state of the “justice system” in Haiti.

As for the baiting in post #24917, sorry I’m not
interested, I don’t have the time.
