Haitian Doctors to Graduate in Cuba
Havana - Cuba, Tuesday, 03 May 2005
The first group of Haitian doctors studying in Cuba will graduate this year
in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba.
AIN News Agency reports that students from 46 countries are currently
enrolled at Santiago's Higher Institute of Medical Sciences including 120 Haitian
students who are in their sixth and final year of studies.
Of the upcoming graduates, 80 are currently in the last stage of their
training working at community medical clinics in Haiti under the guidance and
training of Cuban professors.
The objective of this last step of their medical training is to put students
in the same environment where they will eventually work, thus fostering an
understanding of their country's health problems and allowing students to be
close to their families.
Haiti is one of the world's poorest nations suffering from extreme poverty
and a prevalence of curable diseases and the aftermath of natural disasters.
Some 600 Haitian students are currently studying at the Santiago de Cuba
medical school, which consists of five faculties including a Francophone Caribbean
faculty. In all, more than 9,000 students are enrolled at the center.
This year, more than 1,300 health professionals from 19 nations will graduate
from Cuban medical schools. Cuba's dedication in this effort is a source of
great pride on the island and an endeavour which has an important international
social impact that Cuban President Fidel Castro has vowed to continue.
