No fan of Latortue
Re Miami Police Chief John Timoney's May 8 Other Views column, Joining
forces for democracy: Timoney's rosy assessment of Haiti inflicts more
bullets on most Haitian heads than his entire police force could ever dream.
Gerard Latortue, Haiti's de facto prime minister, was sanctified by Timoney,
who comments that, ``Fortunately, things have started to change. Under the
leadership of Haiti's interim government, bleakness and despair are no
longer dominant features of Haiti's landscape.''
Before the forced departure of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, it seems
that Haiti's government was never good enough. But there has been a litany
of blunders under Latortue, including numerous senseless executions mounted
by government forces, kidnappings, hours and days of electrical blackouts
and institutionalized nepotism and corruption.
