For the second time this year, Master Drummer Frisner Augustin will be in
New Orleans for Haitian drum workshops and individual lessons. This series,
running from July 11 through 16, will focus on the practical aspects of
ceremonial drumming. While exploring how to work with Vodou priests, song
specialists, and initiates, students will learn to accompany the sacred
dances yanvalou, mayi, zèpol, nago, kongo, ibo, djouba, petwo, and banda.
The classes are ensemble workshops, that is, each participant will learn to
play individual parts of a larger, more complex multi-drum rhythm.
Maestro Frisner will explore the Drums of Vodou in ten two-hour sessions
held at the Kay Mystique, an authentic outdoor Peristyle in the United
States. Each class will be held daily, once in the morning and again in the
evening to accommodate as many schedules as possible.
The culmination of these lessons will be on Saturday evening, when an
authentic Vodou ceremony for the Metrès (sweet and fiery female Spirits) is
held. Students will have the opportunity to sit in with members of La Troupe
Makandal and demonstrate what they have learned during the week,
coordinating their drumming with the traditional Vodou chants, sung in
Haitian Kreyol by members of the Vodou Society.
Private drum lessons by appointment.
Running in tandem with the drum workshop is a dance seminar conducted by
Houngan Christopher Obas of Gainesville, FL. This series will focus on the
spiritual dances of Vodou - or those prescribed by reglemen, the rule of
order used to conduct a Vodou ceremony. Dances will be taught under the
tonnel in a ritual dance space. Folkloric dance will be touched on briefly,
but our focus this session is on getting participants to understand how
dance plays into the larger Vodou ritual.
Dr. Lois Wilcken, Executive Director of La Troupe Makandal and author of the
Drums of Vodou will be on hand to give historical context to both seminars.
You'll find New Orleans Mistic at 2267 St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans,
near the corner of Elysian Fields.
