REPATRIATION TO HAITI SUSPENDED

SANTO DOMINGO -- The Dominican Republic has suspended the repatriation of
illegal Haitians, acknowledging the government made errors while expelling
more than 2,000 over the past several days, Foreign Minister Carlos Morales
Troncoso said.

Soldiers regularly round up Haitians, who generally are darker skinned than
mixed-race Dominicans, and truck them to the border.

An advocacy group, however, said legal residents and children born in the
Dominican Republic were recently deported.
