25235: (news) Chamberlain: Obit-Haiti Uprising Leader (fwd)
From: Greg Chamberlain <GregChamberlain@compuserve.com>
PORT-AU-PRINCE, June 8 (AP) -- A gang leader who started the uprising
that led to the ouster of Haiti's President Jean-Bertrand Aristide died
Wednesday of kidney failure, according to a friend and Haiti's media.
Butteur Metayer, 34, died at his home in the northwestern city of
Gonaives surrounded by family, said Winter Etienne, a former member of
Metayer's Cannibal Army gang, whose rebellion was joined by ex-soldiers and
toppled Aristide in February 2004. Private radio Metropole also reported
Metayer's death.
Metayer, a former Aristide ally, turned on the president after his
brother, gang leader Amiot Metayer, was assassinated in 2003. Butteur
Metayer had accused Aristide of ordering the killing to silence his brother
and stop him publishing damaging information about the Haitian leader.
