25431: Durban (Comment) to Math Jay on New Cell Phone Co (fwd)

Math Jay (post 25415) complains about the poor state of the
fixed line phone service in Haiti and wonders if another cell
phone company won't further jeopardize straightening out the
mess that is Teleco.

Strange that no one has seemed to notice that public provision
of services in Haiti like electricity, telephone, road repair,
water, etc. are almost universally bad.  Yet, privatization is
never seriously considered, regardless of the government that
happens to be in power.   Now, would anyone care to guess why
that is?  Perhaps Transparency Int'l could enlighten us?

In the meantime, Hatians who want a working phone will continue
to resort to cellphones avaiable through the gov't-authorized
private sector (ie. Comcel, Haitel, etc.)
