I think it's safe to say that tens of thousands were not killed under
Ariistide.  It is also safe to say that the constitution had yet to be
discarded as it was when Dulvalier made him self president for life.  While
critics have complained of smaller constitutions violations such as the May
2000 vote count, it in no way comes close to abolishing the constitution
completely.

Letting Aristide play him self out would have been far more effective than
taking him from power.  You would not have what you have taking place now.
In the same vein, if the opposition had played a positive role, they would
have leverage at the polls.  Now they have fostered such resenment among
certain sectors, that only civil war is possible and elections are probably
posiened for ever.

But faced with that insistency from day that lavalas had to go has only
fostered a terrible political atmoshpere which has endured for years now.
The opposition obstructed parliament, called for the resignation of Preval
then Aristide, refusing ever to participate.  Ten years of obstruction
without and kind of construction.  If you can name some, I'd be happy to
hear examples.    Certainly if there had been an air of compromise, a desire
to change things in the country, things would be different.  Point the
finger at Aristide, but the opposition has been a negative one from the
start and deserves equal blame in what is taking place.
