CELEBRATE HAITI¹S POPULAR STRUGGLES WITH MUSIC AND DANCE IN BROOKLYN¹S
PROSPECT PARK
La Troupe Makandal presents its seventh annual Bwa Kayiman. Celebrate the
historic gathering that launched Haiti¹s Revolution in 1791. Participate in
a drum-and-dance drama inspired by Haiti¹s steadfast struggle for social and
economic justice. National Heritage Fellow Frisner Augustin provides music
and artistic direction. Choreography by Master Dancer Pierre Desrameaux.
Produced by Executive Director and musicologist Dr. Lois Wilcken.
This year¹s performance salutes Haiti¹s ancestral nations from West and
Central Africa who united in the cause of dignity and self-determination.
Drawing on timeless spiritual traditions, our artists call on Atibon Legba,
the gatekeeper who opens the way to destiny, and Èzili Dantò, the divine
female warrior. A unique blend of narrative, music, and dance will guide the
audience through the dramatic rites that triggered a massive insurrection
and gave birth to a free black republic in the Americas.
Admission is FREE. Date and place: Sunday, 14 August, 4 pm, Prospect Park
Imagination Playground, Brooklyn, New York. Q or B subway to Prospect Park
(Lincoln Road exit); or the 16 bus to Ocean and Lincoln. Enter the Park at
the intersection of Lincoln Road and Ocean Avenue; make an immediate left
and continue south about 200 yards to Imagination Playground. Bring blankets
or lawn chairs.
This event is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Development Fund
of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the
Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC). Additional funding has been made possible
by the Puffin Foundation and the American Music Center.
