26168: Simidor (FYI): Alert on Leonel Fernandez visit in NYC (fwd)
From: daniel simidor <danielsimidor@yahoo.com>
What is happening to our people in the Dominican
Republic is an absolute shame and a disgrace for both
countries. Haitians in the Dominican Republic are
treated like chattel slaves from one generation to the
next, exploited without mercy when their services are
needed, and hunted down and deported without a shred
of rights when their work is done. By all
indications, we are at the beginning of another
killing season against Haitians in the Dominican
Republic ? the worse since 1937. The Dominican head
of state, the military, the press, and lynch mobs in
many parts of the country, each in their own way
contribute to what is shaping up as a major
anti-Haitian pogrom.
Right now, there is no greater priority for Haitian
immigrants and Haitian communities in the United
States, Canada and France, than to mobilize our energy
and resources for a massive international campaign
against this inhumane situation. Leonel Fernandez,
the Dominican president, is coming to New York the
week of Sep. 11. In light of the massive violations
of the basic rights of our fellow citizens in the
Dominican Republic, there should be a mass
demonstration of 10 to 50 thousand Haitians to greet
Fernandez in New York. But nothing of the sort is
likely to happen because the Haitian community is
divided against itself, thanks in part to the
ambitions of one man, his accomplices and fellow
travelers. Or can the community rise above its
divisions and lethargy, to once again show its true
mettle? Stay tuned.
