HAITIAN TROUPE LAUNCHES CARNIVAL ON JANUARY 7 IN BROOKLYN
La Troupe Makandal, New York¹s Center for Afro-Haitian Traditional Arts,
presents ³Carnival Dawn,² its closing performance of Rising Sun: a Vodou
Drama of Death and Rebirth. "Carnival Dawn" marks the transition from
winter ceremonials to pre-vernal rites, and it salutes Haiti¹s Independence
Day, January 1, a day that also signaled the demise of slavery throughout
the region. Experience a Caribbean-style Twelfth Night as we cut the cake
for the Three Kings. Participate in a get-together with Haitian artists.
Cap the festivities by dancing to the beat of the season¹s first Carnival
band.
Drumming and song arrangements by NEA Heritage Fellow Master Drummer Frisner
Augustin. Dance directed by visiting artist Pierre Desrameaux, formerly of
Haiti¹s National Folkloric Troupe. Light refreshments for sale. Admission:
