27379: Berggren: (reply) Haitian Creole Conversational Patterns
From: MEBerggren@aol.com
I thoroughly enjoyed the article by Dr. Dejean regarding 15 questions on
Haitian Creole. I am a student in College of Education at Florida Atlantic
University. I am doing a research project on Discourse and Cross-Cultural
Conversational Patterns of the Haitian Creole Language. If you have any
information that you could share with me, I would greatly appreciate it. I
especially
would like to address any concerns or issues that future (or current)
teachers should be made aware of when assisting ELL students whose first
language
is Creole.
The information that I need would address turn-taking, topic selection,
conversational repair (when misunderstandings occur), and appropriateness of
conversations as well as rhetorical patterns. This is for a TESOL class where
we
will discuss the fact that children might be very educated and still not
construct a story in the same manner as a teacher might expect.
I thank you in advance for your time,
Carol Berggren
