OMA's premier international exhibit is a rare glimpse of art works depicting
our ancestral linkage, Catholic saints, Voodoo spirits, and contemporary
mythical images rendered in sparkling sequin tapestries. Each sequin is
attached with a glass bead in a six step hand-sewn process.
Louisiana artist Tina Girouard spent over a decade in Haiti working with the
men who created an art form unique in the world. She wrote the first book
to recognize the art historically, entitled Sequin Artists of Haiti and she
has based this current exhibition design on her book.
Girouard as guest curator selected art works that illustrate the evolution of
Haiti's sequin tapestry from expressions of spiritual belief to the new form of
contemporary art by featured artist, Antoine Oleyant.
