27654: Simidor (comment) Re: 27623: NY Times article: A dream come true! (fwd)
From: Daniel Simidor <danielsimidor@yahoo.com>
NYTimes headline, Friday, 2/10/06: ?Candidate of
Haiti's Poor Leads in Early Tally With 61% of Vote.?
With such a warm embrace of Rene Preval, the NYTimes,
too, must be on the side of the Haitian poor! But
several paragraphs into the article, we read that:
Political observers have said Mr. Préval
was sought out by the United States and
governments leading the United Nations
Stabilization Mission struggling to
restore order.?
The poor now have every reason to celebrate! By
tapping Preval for the job, the mighty US government,
too, must be on the side of the Haitian poor!
But wait. A few weeks ago, in a piece that was mostly
ignored on this list and on the Alterpresse website,
http://www.alterpresse.org/article.php3?id_article=3571,
I wrote that a Preval-Simeus deal was in the making
and that this unholy alliance would have the blessing
of both Aristide and of his nemesis in Wash. The
NYTimes Ginger Thompson relates exactly what I
predicted:
Mr. Préval said he that would recruit Haitian
professionals overseas to
help rebuild the government, and hinted that he had
offered a job in
his administration to a former presidential
candidate, Dumarsais
Siméus, a Haitian-born business magnate who was
forced out of the race
because he is an American citizen.
Uncle Sam?s design had been transparent all along: use
Preval to make Simeus go down more smoothly. Preval
is changing Marassa or "mèt tèt," but he remains a
patsy, a puppet. The UN remains "la vieille putain"
that Fanon described 45 years ago. And the people
once again are being played for suckers. Even with
the best elections possible, and 34 candidates to
choose from, a vote for any candidate is still a vote
for the system! It's a bitter pill to swallow... but
don?t get me wrong: there will always be enough
spoils, enough crumbs and zombie checks for the
deserving few... La-va-las-se-ment!
?You?ve been hoodwinked. You?ve been had. You?ve been
took. You?ve been led astray, led amok. You?ve been
bamboozled.? (Malcolm X)
