28084: Stidham (comment) Re: re 28080 Labrom re pickpockets in Jacmel (fwd)
From David Stidham (stiddemdavid@aol.com)
I've been pickpocketed so many time in Port-au-Prince I think I now know
when it is happening. I am always amazed how graceful and polite Haitians
walk--never bumping or brushing against anyone--even in the narrow, crowded
passageways through the cramped vendor stalls along major streets. If I
am even
the slightest bumped or brushed by someone in those conditions, I
automatically know it is a pickpocket. Once I was bumped into by a guy
who apologized,
and I walked on. After a few steps, I had this funny feeling. I reached for
my front jeans pocket in which I had placed a few bills and had stuffed a
handkerchief. The handkerchief was gone, along with a few US dollars. The one
goud note I had in my pocket was still there. I figured the pickpocket kept
what he thought was of value, but returned the worthless goud to my pocket.
