I was waiting to see if anyone
would reply to the question of oil discovery in Haiti. There is a French
saying that "il n'y pas de fumee sans feu". Indeed, there were talks about
that since Cedras time and at one point it was just a matter of who will be
responsible to exploit the oil and we never heard anything since. There is a
complete silence on this issue. Any responsible government should shed light
on this and declare whether Haiti does have this important resource base. In
any case, we don't have the means nor the capacity to exploit it - In my view,
no country can dictate what should be done with resources found on its soil.
One way of protecting these resources is to make this information public if
indeed it is true. the Government should also invest in research so that we
can make our own discovery. We may be sitting on tones of opportunities but
the least the government can do is to inform its citizens. If
any one else has credible information in this regard, please communicate it to
us. There is also uranium in the south.

In reply to Richard's comments about the Energy crisis in Haiti I have two
comments which I would like the Corbeteers' opinions on:

1) I understand from older Haitian friends that there is Oil out near Leogane -
it seems that some French geologists found it years ago and they reckoned it
was on the same 'vein' as Venezuela. But the Haitian govt. are being blocked
from exploiting it by the US Govt. somehow! I didn't really understand that
reasoning. But has anyone else heard this? It would be wonderful if it was
true.

2) the other day on Metropole I heard some environmental person (can't remember
who) saying that the rubbish that PauP creates on a daily basis could be used
to solve the energy crisis! Now there's a thought - two birds with one stone!!
Anyone else got a theory on this!!
