The literature on immigration to the United States generally explains
that it is not the poorest of the poor who make the journey (see
Alejandro Portes and Ruben Rumbaut's IMMIGRANT AMERICA: A PORTRAIT, pages
10-12, for example). Moreover, as Alex Stepick writes, "Haitians do not
immigrate to the United States randomly as separate individuals, each
independently deciding to migrate. Instead, as Laguerre (1984) and
Fjellman and Gladwin (1985) have demonstrated, Haitian families organize
immigration" (PRIDE AGAINST PREJUDICE: HATIAINS IN THE UNITED STATES, p.
16). Therefore, it is safe to assume that much of the cost for boat
travel to the United States of the Bahamas is covered by migrants'
relatives in the North America Haitian diaspora.
