28521: Robins: Seeking archival materials on Rara

From: Jeremy Robins <jeremy107@yahoo.com>

Hello Mr. Corbett,

I discovered your listserve a few months ago [when one of our events was
forwarded to the list]. I¹ve been subscribed since then, and been really
impressed by and appreciative of the information and discussions.

As I explain below, I¹m a documentary filmmaker doing a project on Haitian
rara in Brooklyn. I¹m also currently archival materials, and I¹d be
interested in your suggestions on archival leads. I also drafted a letter
for the list below [although if you have suggestions on better ways to post
this, please let me know.]

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, and best regards,
-Jeremy Robins

A documentary film on Haitian Rara music in Brooklyn is looking for archival
materials (or any leads on materials). ³The Other Side of the Water² is a
grant-funded documentary-in-progress about a group of young musicians
reviving rara music in New York. To date we¹ve had rough-cuts presented by
BAM and Carnegie Hall, and we¹re currently in the final rounds of production
and post-production.

More information on the documentary can be found at:
http://www.othersideofthewater.org

We are currently looking for leads on:

-Any old archival film or Rara being performed in Haiti ideally pre 1950.
[we already have some of Maya Deren¹s footage and some George Easton Simpson
film from the 30¹s]

-Any footage of Rara¹s in NY in the 90¹s [in Prospect Park, the Brooklyn
Bridge FDA protest in 1990, rara used in protests outside the UN?]

-Other home movie-style images of Brooklyn¹s Flatbush neighborhood or
Prospect Park from the 70¹s to the 90¹s. These would ideally include some
kind of music, but we¹re looking for other street scenes, or landscape shots
as well?

Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please contact:
