I've been on the list for a short period of time and therefore not that
familiar with Mr. Durban and his background. I just think based on his reply to the
question "What Should Haitian High School School Students Study?" he is on
the right track. This is a good time to address the issue of promoting creole. I
have no problem with making Creole the official language of Haiti and
promoting it. My suggestion is we keep the spelling close to French as possible. This
will make it easier for Haitians to pick up the French language later. It is
my understanding Haitian politicians at various times had ambitious literacy
programs for the marginalised majority. These Creole verbs and words that are
mostly based on French will give the people a foundation which will facilitate
learning the French language to be able have dialogue with French Canada, many
African and European countries. I do not hold any degrees in education but it
is my humble opinion that for someone starting from scratch, it will be just
as hard to learn to write the new version of Creole as will be to learn the
French-leaning Creole.
