Geographical Reconnaissance of the Cibao of Santo
Domingo? by William Van Royen, in Geographical Review,
Vol. 28, No. 4 (Oct., 1938), pp. 556-572: ?The  U.S.
Geographic Board in 1933 (See its Sixth Report, 1890
to 1932, Washington, 1933, p. 367) adopted the name
Hispaniola for the island, which consists of two
political units, the Republic of Haiti and the
Dominican Republic.?  The footnote goes on with some
rationale for that decision.

There is also an article by Edmond Mangones, ?L'Ile
d'Haïti. une regrettable initiative de la U. S.
Geographic Board? in Revue de la Societe d?Histoire et
de Geographie d?Haiti, vol. 5, No. 15, Port-au-Prince,
