A Haitian art exhibit will have a grand opening ceremony tonight.
A.C.T.I.O.N. Foundation, a cultural arts organization, the Broward County
Libraries Division and Galerie d'Art Nader in Miami and Galerie Marassa in
Haiti will jointly present the exhibit, Roots: The Idea of Modernity in Haitian
Contemporary Art: The Works of Philippe Dodard.
The ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. in gallery six on the sixth floor of
the main library.
A symposium, ''The Idea of Modernity in African Diaspora Art,'' will accompany
the art exhibit from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Broward County Main Library, 100 S.
Andrews Ave. It features several scholars from Florida International,
Vanderbilt and Syracuse universities, along with other schools.
The exhibit will remain at the library through Dec. 3. It explores the concept
of modernity in Haitian art through the paintings, sculptures and fine jewelry
of Haitian-born artist Philippe Dodard. About 60 artworks will be presented.
