Local Elections: Violence between followers of the
Alliance and Fusion candidates injures several in
Maissade.


Maïssade, November 8th, 2006 (AHP).  Several people
were injured last weekend in Maissade during
confrontations between two opposing camps supporting
candidates from the Alliance and Fusion parties
running in the municipal elections.

Fire-arm use and rock-throwing marked the
confrontation that broke out in the wake of
maneuvering by both parties for control of all the
electoral structures in the region.

Witnesses reported Wednesday that the Alliance deputy
Willio Joseph had to make use of his gun to fend for
his life.

The local and municipal elections set for December 3rd
are of the highest importance, which explains why the
political parties do not seem to want to give an inch.

It is, in effect, through the territorial
collectivities that the justices of the peace and
examining magistrates will be elected.

Other stakes in this election are the choice of the
assemblies in each geograophic department and the nine
members of the inter-departmental council, which must
meet at the same time as the sessions of the council
of ministers.

The provincial assemblies also have a voice in
choosing the permanent electoral council.

With so much at stake, completing the voting process
has been difficult since 1990, the date of the first
post-Duvalier elections.
