Hastings could lead
Re the Nov. 29 story Under pressure, Pelosi rejects Hastings for intelligence
post: Alcee Hastings is one of the finest public servants I've known in 27
years of advocacy.
In 1981, as a federal judge, Hastings single-handedly stymied unlawful
government action designed to quickly deport Haitian asylum seekers by
certifying a nationwide class action and prohibiting kangaroo-court hearings in
remote facilities without counsel.
He's a man with brains and integrity. That's why incoming House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi wanted him to lead the House Intelligence Committee in the first place.
The loss of his leadership is a loss to the country.
STEVEN DAVID FORESTER, senior policy advocate, Haitian Women of Miami, Miami
