29766: kathleen (reply) Jacques Brel and Haitian interpretations (fwd)
From: Kathleen Burke <kathleenmb@adelphia.net>
I discovered Brel while living in Paris in early 70s- actually on my first
visit. So, I knew his music first in French, and drove my brother crazy
(others as well) as you did. The translated -into -English show was
marvelously done, altho some songs could not work in American culture ("Jef"for
example) the changes they made were sensible. I have all of Brel's music on
vinyl; did not spring for cd of show in English. His rendering is fabulous .
Dadou Pasquet of Magnum Band did a wonderful interpretation in English on "If
You Go Away," LIVE AT BERKLEE!! 1993 .
I lived in Haiti 99 -05, visited 95 and 96. My friends who did likewise and I
mourn as you do, the loss of security. I am angry also, what kind of
government doesn't punish criminals at all? (Well, U.S. certain kinds, but at
least you can go for a coke and call the cops.) Just yesterday, friends in
Papay were moving my stuff out of house I renovated and rented - A sad goodbye.
If I ever get back there I'll retrieve the boxes of "Live at Berklee" (I
produced it) and send it on, presuming we are.still alive. Kathleen
