30401: re Labrom - announcement of Launch of Haiti Amorial Book in NY (fwd)

from voyageslumierehaiti@gmail.com

The book I mentioned sometime ago about the Coats of Arms for all the
Nobility created by Henry Christophe has now been published. It was
launched in England on May 5th and it will be launched in New York on
May 30th. Here are the details. It really is a beautiful book - costs
US$85 and quite a historic book. All Haiti lovers should have one!!!

Announcement from:

The Armorial of Haiti: Symbols of Nobility in the Reign of Henry Christophe

by Clive Cheesman, with a historical introduction by Marie-Lucie Vendryes

and a preface by Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor-General of Canada.

Published by The College of Arms, London, 2007. ISBN 978-09506980-2-1.

The launch of the above book will take place at The New York
Genealogical & Biographical Society, 122 East 58th Street, in New York
City, on 30 May 2007 at
6 PM. The work reproduces in its entirety a fascinating manuscript of
Haitian origin held since 1858, at the latest, at the College of Arms.

The manuscript, entitled L'Armorial Général du Royaume d'Hayti, is a
contemporary painted record of the coats of arms granted to the
nobility of the kingdom of Henry Christophe, who ruled over the
northern part of Haiti from 1811 to 1820. While the manuscript has
been studied and discussed in print before, as well as twice being
exhibited, it has never been published in its complete state.

The Armorial of Haiti presents a full reproduction of the manuscript
with a commentary giving biographical and historical details regarding
the members of the Christophian court, and discussing the design of
the individual coats of arms, which, when looked at closely, display
the characteristics of a coherent local, "creolized" approach to
heraldry. An introduction by Marie-Lucie Vendryes sets the historical
scene, while an essay by Clive Cheesman discusses the structure and
character of Henry Christophe's monarchy and court, the origins and
purpose of the manuscript, and its history as both known and
reconstructed from its physical state. An appendix gives the original
text of relevant decrees and edicts, and offers the first attempt at a
full list of the Christophian nobility.

We very much hope that you or a colleague will be able to attend the
launch of this unusual and significant book. Contact John Shannon,
President, College of Arms Foundation, at john.shannon@coaf.us to
indicate you will attend.

Jacqui Labrom
