John,
A do-gooder to me is a Charity worker, someone whose mission is to do
charity work. In my mind, there is nothing pejorative about that. Two references in
your post prompted my comment: 1) the tractor, parts of which were stolen 2)
2000 banana plants that neighbors let goats destroy. I feel that too many
people go to Haiti and decide for the people what is best for them only to get
totally disappointed when something happens. The approach suggested in my post
is to inquire from the people what they need most and work with them to
achieve it and not impose what we think they need best to avoid the tractor or
the banana plant situation. And it doesn't matter where you go around the world
be it Haiti, Jamaica, Miami, Boston, New York City, Indonesia, Thailand, my
basic suggestion would remain the same so therefore it is not important
where I am at this time. I would applaud what you are doing so long as it does
not take away the people's will to fight for themselves for necessary
fundamental changes in the society.
