Haitian Education & Leadership Program (HELP)

U.S. Development Director



The Haitian Education & Leadership Program (HELP), Haiti's largest
university scholarship program, is seeking an experienced fundraiser for a
U.S. based part-time Development Director. The Development Director will
play a central role in building an organization which provides opportunity
for deserving young men and women to raise themselves and their families out
of poverty and provide services essential for Haiti's growth and
development.



HELP is a non-profit corporation registered in New York State with offices
in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

We provide merit-based university scholarships in Haiti for top high school
graduates from severely disadvantaged backgrounds. HELP serves bright,
motivated young men and women with a proven record of academic achievement
for whom the only obstacle to a university education and a better future is
the lack of financial resources.  HELP scholarships contribute to the growth
of Haiti's professional class and change Haiti's long-standing inequities
and rigid class structure. For the '07/'08 academic year HELP is sponsoring
75 students studying education, medicine and nursing, law, engineering,
accounting, agronomy, chemistry, computer science and statistics. In a
country of 50% unemployment and a GDP per capita of $450, HELP graduates
have a 100% employment rate at an average annual salary of $8,000. For more

Job Description

The Development Director will report directly to HELP's Board of Directors
and will have primary responsibility for designing and implementing HELP's
fundraising plan, for individual and institutional donors, as well as
related communications functions. This is a new position with a small but
growing organization. We are looking for a dynamic, creative, flexible
person willing to develop the job itself and to rise to new challenges as
our work expands.



Responsibilities

* Develop a Fundraising Plan to support HELP's existing work and double the
organization's size in 2-4 years (current annual budget: $280,000);

* Map donor landscape & establish and maintain donor management database;

* Expand HELP's individual and institutional donor base by identifying and
pursuing new donors, cultivating and maintaining relationships;

* Develop grant proposals in collaboration with HELP management team;

* Maintain relations with existing donors, including preparing reports,
grant renewals, etc;

* Develop/upgrade and maintain HELP's communication and public relations
materials, including brochure, website, Annual Report, etc.

* Plan and execute fundraising events;

* Occasional travel may be required.



Qualifications

* A demonstrated track record in fundraising, grant management and public
relations;

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to articulate HELP's mission
and methods;

* Organized and ability to work independently;

* Ability to work as a member of a small team, under pressure and in a
fast-paced environment;

* Strong computer skills, knowledge of data-base preferred;

* Preferred candidate would have interest in one or more of the following:
Haiti, international, development issues, education.



Compensation: This is a part-time position. Salary commensurate with
experience.

Location: Location is flexible. Tri-State (NYC) area candidates preferred.
