Deibert (comment) Response to to Peter Kondrat regarding the Lancet study
From michaeldeibert@gmail.com:
1. In a previous post, Peter Kondrat called the Lancet piece a "scientific
study in a respected medical journal," which does indeed seem to speak of his
being overawed by anything that gets printed on official letterhead and lines
up roughly with his cause-du-jour agenda. Sorry, Peter, but your propensity for
hero worship appears to have lead you astray yet again.
2. Peter Kondrat's positing that the only two available sources for human
rights reporting on Haiti are the Lancet and myself would be silly were it not
so disrespectful and condescending to the Haitians working hard and at great
risk in the field of human rights and development. One should check with the
myriad of Haitian-run organizations (SOFA, EnfoFamn, GARR, PAPDA, Commission
Episcopale Nationale Justice et Paix ) if they want reliable information on the
human rights situation in Haiti.
3. Peter Kondrat refers to Lavalas a "popular movement?" Not for some time,
Peter. Wasn't it Rene Preval's coalition that won the last presidential
election in Haiti? How much did Marc Bazin, the Fanmi Lavalas candidate, poll
in those elections again? As to those "orphans," I knew quite a few of them in
Cite Soleil, Peter, a shame you never came down to chat with them.
4. "The sample of data that was reviewed and verified was too small for
Michael's taste." Not just for my taste, it would appear.
(Peter Kondrat somehow skipped the number 5)
6. Peter Kondrat writes that the statement that the Lancet authors claimed no
rapes were committed by Fanmi Lavalas supporters according to their study is "a
lie." Alas, it is Peter Kondrat who is lying on this point. Page 6 of the
Lancet study states the percentage of "Lavalas members or partisans" as having
committed murder or sexual assault as "none." Look it up, Peter

MIchael, I will happily post the note if you will delete the first sentence.
It is a personal attack. The rest attacks his argument, and that's fine.
