====================

The Embassy of the Republic of Haiti, as part of its ongoing program in
cultural affairs, is pleased to invite you to a special presentation:

A Jewel in the Crown:
Charles Sumner and the Struggle for Haiti's Recognition

This unique exhibition, featuring historic documents and artifacts, is
the work of Dr.
Fritz Daguillard, and will be open to the public by appointment only
between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November 22 - December
3, 1999. Please R.S.V.P. by calling 202.332.4090 ext. 10.

Dr. Daguillard has long been interested in Massachusetts Senator Charles
Sumner and the struggle of the Boston gentry on behalf of Haiti since
his days as a student at Harvard University. In his recently published
book En Causant d’Haïti, he highlights this fascinating chapter in
Haiti’s history.

In the exhibit A Jewel in the Crown, and its accompanying catalogue, he
tells, with a
careful balance of words and pictures, the story of the individuals
whose combined efforts made Haiti’s diplomatic recognition by the
United States in 1862 possible.

The accompanying catalogue "A Jewel in the Crown: Charles Sumner and the
Struggle for Haiti's Recognition" will be available for sale after
November 16th by the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
