how about an alternative phrase like "haiti, the nation which 
simultaneously defeated the french, english and spanish before becoming 
the poorest nation in the hemisphere..." or perhaps striving for 
"haiti, which used to be the poorest nation in the hemisphere before 
becoming an economic powerhouse..." or less ambitiously.."haiti, with 
its new stable economy is now..."
