#1453: Labling of Haiti: Antoine replies to Corbett

From: Guy Antoine <GuyAntoine@windowsonhaiti.com>

Bob, no one is denying Haiti's poverty, or saying that one should
not point to its poverty. At the very least, this was not my point. I
was talking about the never-fail labeling of Haiti as the poorest
country in the Western Hemisphere in news stories, which often
have nothing to say otherwise about Haiti's economy, and treat
of unrelated topics. Do you consider this as a denial of Haiti's
physical poverty? I should think not.

I do not see this as an exercise of political correctness either.
This is simply saying: "Hey, enough already!" I have only read
this particular phrase about ten million times. This may be my
country's present condition, but it's not part of its name. And as
far as I can tell, this automatic act of labeling is specially reserved
for Haiti. If I am wrong, I would be happy to consider the evidence.

Yes, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. If
you did not already know, well you just heard me affirm it. But do
you need me to tell you again tomorrow?

Poor, poor Haiti!

Guy S. Antoine
