#1556: The accuracy of "the Phrase" -- Bellegarde-Smith comments

The "phrase," "the poorest country in the Western hemisphere," is for the
lame and the lazy, just as the on again off again characterization seen on
this line, that Haiti's problems and underdevelopment stem from "poverty
and bloodshed." These are the kind of circuitous statements that mistake
effect for cause. At all universities, we try to discourage that kind of
thinking as shallow, unthinking, unconscious as well as ill-informed!
